Buddhas at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Thailand has so much to offer the active, adventure-seeking traveller - this tour starts in the vibrant, colourful capital of Bangkok, with its majestic monuments and neon nightlife before featuring a village home-stay in Kanchanaburi, and the temples of Ayutthaya. In northern Thailand we visit Chiang Mai, adventure capital of the north, for some jungle trekking, bamboo rafting and an elephant ride. Finally we visit Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle before returning to Bangkok. Suited to the budget travellers’ pocket with plenty of free time and guided tours as optional extras, this tour offers fantastic value for money and the peace of mind of a well organised tour.
We begin your tour in Bangkok, with plenty of time to enjoy all this cosmopolitan city has to offer. We take a walking tour of the important temples and markets before heading to Kanchanaburi, home of the 'Bridge on the River Kwai', where we spend the night with a local family and learn about and take part in traditional village life. After time to visit the local sites we head to Ayutthaya and explore the historic temples at this World Heritage Site before hopping aboard the overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai.
Once in Chiang Mai we take you on a tour of this charming and bustling city, stopping at the most important sights along the way.
Bamboo rafting, Chiang Mai, Thailand
From Chiang Mai we make our way out to the Huay Nam Dang National Park to begin your jungle adventure. En-route we will visit a local village market to pick up supplies, and have a refreshing stop at a local waterfall. After an easy first afternoon's walk through the forest, we visit a Karen village to sample their simple way of life and to learn a bit more about the local customs – including a basic dinner and overnight in a bamboo hut.
The next day features a longer walk (approx. 7-8km, about 3 hours) through the forest and jungle, before we climb aboard an elephant and a chance to get close to nature on a ride through the jungle.
After spending the night in another hill-tribe village, we spend the next day enjoying a bamboo rafting trip back (approx. 3-4 hours) before returning to Chiang Mai. In Chiang Mai there is time for more sightseeing after which we drive to Chiang Rai via Thaton and a long-tail river boat trip. Once in Chiang Rai, trips out to the hill-tribe villages and mystery of the Golden Triangle can't be resisted.
The tour ends with a drive back to Chiang Mai and the overnight sleeper train back to Bangkok.
Airport transfers are available at the start and end of the tour if required, or you can use this tour as part of a longer stay in Thailand. Our
Thailand Explorer tour starts alongside this tour before heading south to Khao Sok National Park and the islands of Ko Samui and Ko Tao.
