Dark Blue Tiger Butterfly, Khao Sok National Park, Thailand
Dark Blue Tiger Butterfly, Khao Sok National Park, Thailand
With time exploring Bangkok's rural suburbs with their traditional villages and farmland, a visit to a colourful floating market, and a range of activies in Khao Sok National Park, this tour is designed to get you out of the cities and into Thailand's natural environment. We see spectacular countryside, learn about and view some of Thailand's wildlife and rural culture, and enjoy some memorable overnight accommodations in tree and raft houses.

On arrival in Bangkok, we greet you and transfer you to your 3-star hotel in the city centre. After settling in, our first tour takes us out of the city for an easy day's cycling through local villages and countryside, where we get a glimpse of rural Thai life, fish farms, rice mills and traditional Thai wooden houses. After a stop at the old market town of Nong Chock we board boats for a cruise down the Saen Seab canal (a sightseeing tour of the Grand Palace and other temples is available for those who don't want to cycle).

Next we visit the colourful Damnoen Saduak floating market before visitng Wat Don Wai, an old community with a lively street market where local food and desserts are prepared. We also see home-made palm-sugar being produced and visit a hand-made Benjarong ceramics works.

Leaving Bangkok we head south on the overnight sleeper train to Khao Sok National Park, which will be our base for the next few days. Covered by the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, the park features huge limestone mountains shooting straight up in the air, deep valleys, breathtaking lakes, exciting caves, wild animals and much more. In dense regions of the forest a few tigers still prowl and the park is also home to leopard, golden cat and clouded leopard, though they are rarely seen. Elephant, gaur, serow, benteng, Malay sun-bear, Malay tapir and wild pig roam the forest floor while gibbon, languor and macaque are abundant in the canopy above. In addition, over 180 bird species are to be found in the park including 5 species of hornbill, the giant argues pheasant and 13 species of woodpecker.

While in the park, we will take walks to view the wildlife and many dramatic waterfalls, and visit a nearby village with its interesting temple and small caves. We spend an exciting night in treehouse cabins right up in the forest canopy and then travel by boat to our raft houses on the Raja Phraba Lake, and a chance to relax and swim before an evening walk to observe the natural nightlife of the rainforest.

Leaving the park, we make our way back to Bangkok on the overnight sleeper train, where we enjoy a boat trip on the surprisingly rural Western suburbs of Bangkok, seeing an orchid farm, local temples and the boat-house where the royal barges are kept and maintained. Your tour ends with a transfer back to the airport for your departure.
