| Golden Triangle Tour |
14 days |
Grand Palace, Bangkok, Thailand This holiday is a comprehensive, extended version of our Thailand Uncovered tour, and combines visits to temples & palaces in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, with a hill-tribe trek, elephant ride and bamboo rafting trip, before you head further north into Thailand's famous Golden Triangle. Here we travel by car and by boat, and explore some remote border villages, beautiful scenery, and the city of Chiang Rai.
The tour begins in the busy and bustling city of Bangkok, with a tour of the Grand Palace, and an afternoon long-tail boat trip through the peaceful canals of Thonburi, in the west of the city. From Bangkok, we head north on the overnight sleeper train to the city of Chiang Mai where we include a tour to the colourful Doi Suthep temple overlooking the city. You will also have some free time in Chiang Mai to explore the bazaars, visit more temples, or try a Thai cooking course.
Elephant safari in Chiang Mai, Thailand Our adventurous activities start after we visit a local market in Mae Malai and stop for a quick dip at an impressive waterfall. An easy couple of hours of walking brings us to a local Karen hill-tribe village where we will learn about their simple way of life, including bamboo weaving and trap making. During another full morning's trekking through mixed and bamboo forests, as well as farmed rice and vegetable fields, we'll learn about the various cultivation and hunting techniques employed by the local villagers. Next it’s on board an elephant for a short ride through beautiful unspoiled jungle before taking to the river for a exciting journey aboard traditional bamboo rafts, stopping en route at local villages.
Wat Phra Keo, Grand Palace, Bangkok, Thailand After returning to Chiang Mai, our final destination on the tour is Chiang Rai and the famous Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. We make a loop through the region from Chiang Mai to cover it thoroughly, and feature an exciting long-tail boat trip on the Mae Kok river, as well as visits to Yao and Akha hill-tribe villages and the border town of Mae Sai. We also have time to visit more sites and explore Chiang Rai before returning to Chiang Mai where you have a free day before the overnight sleeper train returns us to Bangkok.
Options are available to extend this tour to spend more time in Bangkok, to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia, or to relax on one of southern Thailand's beautiful beaches. Our Khao Sok Jungle Safari, and Jungles & Islands tours are also timed to start immediately after this tour, and can be combined to create one longer holiday.
